Breast augmentation is among the most popular cosmetic procedures in the country. Whether the patient is looking to restore their pre-baby figure, or simply wants to feel more confident about their breasts, undergoing a surgical procedure is a big decision. During an initial consultation, the plastic surgeon will walk the patient through the steps leading up to, and following the procedure. One of the most asked questions during the consultation process is how long is the recovery from a breast augmentation?
What is a Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation, also commonly known as a boob job, is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts with implants. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon will make an incision around, or underneath the breast, and place the implant either above or under the pectoral muscle. Implants are typically filled with saline or silicone, and the plastic surgeon can help advise on which implant is best for the patient’s goals or needs. Upon placement, the plastic surgeon will then close the incision using dissolving sutures.
How Long Is the Recovery Process?
The recovery process from breast augmentation is not something that should be taken lightly, as the body will need to time to heal from the procedure. The initial recovery process typically takes about 2-3 weeks, during that time patients are encouraged to wear a support garment, or keep their bandages on. Timing may vary depending on the post-op plan provided by their physician. Patients should take note not to lift any heavy objects and should take the first week of recovery off from work. Normal activity can be resumed after 3-4 works, and vigorous exercise can be taken up after 6 weeks. Final results from the breast augmentation are noticeable within a month following the procedure.
What Are the Benefits?
Breast augmentation has an extremely high patient satisfaction rate, as it can help patients feel more confident and comfortable with their body. Other benefits of the procedure include:
- Enhanced volume and projection of the breasts
- A more balanced figure
- Increase self image and self confidence
