What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck, such as:

  • Excess fat and skin relaxation in the lower face that creates jowls
  • Excess fatty deposits under the chin
  • Loose neck skin
  • Muscle banding in the neck, which creates abnormal contours

The loss of youthful contours in the face and neck can be due to a variety of factors, including heredity, gravity, environmental conditions, and stress. When the neck area doesn’t match the upper facial appearance, a neck lift may be a good solution.

Candidates for a Neck Lift

Some people feel they are not ready for a full facelift because the upper face is still pleasing. However, many patients will note excess wrinkling of the neck skin, a “turkey wattle” or double chin, and jowl lines. These people may be good candidates for a neck lift instead.

Candidates should be healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for their results and are willing to follow their plastic surgeon’s recommendations for recovery.

How Does It Work?

A neck lift is performed by correcting sagging jawline and neck muscles, as well as removing any excess skin to help highlight the repositioned muscles. To begin the neck lift procedure, your plastic surgeon will make incisions behind the ears and potentially underneath the chin. Once these incisions are made, your plastic surgeon will access the jawline and neck muscles and reposition them to correct sagging. Finally, excess skin will be trimmed and your incisions will be closed.

At the time of neck lift surgery, other procedures such as eyelid lifts and fat grafting can be performed.

Your neck lift results can usually be seen within the first few months after the surgery, with your final results visible at six months. This is because it takes time for the surgical swelling to dissipate, giving way to the patient’s newfound appearance.

The initial recovery period from a neck lift procedure usually takes about two to three weeks. We recommend that patients take up to two weeks off from work, as you’ll do the majority of your recovery at this time. During this time, you’ll see a lot of swelling and bruising within the first two to three weeks, and your neck may feel tighter. You should be able to get back to your normal routine (including physical activity) within the third or fourth week after recovery.
