What is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:

  • Sagging in the middle of your face
  • Deep creases below the lower eyelids
  • Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
  • Fat that has fallen or has disappeared
  • Loss of skin tone in the lower face that creates jowls
  • Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can give even a person of normal weight the appearance of a double chin

The loss of youthful contours in the face can be due to a variety of factors, including heredity, gravity, environmental conditions, and stress.

Candidates for a Facelift

The best candidates for a facelift may have noticed significant facial sagging, especially around the jawline and lower-to-mid facial region. Some candidates with sagging eyelids may also see benefits from facelifts, although we recommend eyelid lifts for candidates who only have eyelid sagging.

Candidates should be healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for their results and are willing to follow their plastic surgeon’s recommendations for recovery.

How Does It Work?

A facelift is performed by correcting sagging facial muscles and removing any excess skin to help highlight this new facial structure. To begin the facelift procedure, your plastic surgeon will make incisions behind the ears and along the hairline (this helps hide surgical scars). Once these incisions are made, your plastic surgeon will access the facial muscles and reposition them to correct facial sagging. Finally, excess skin will be trimmed and your incisions will be closed.

Results*

Your facelift results can usually be seen within three to six weeks after the procedure, although your final results may take up to a year. Facelift procedures have high patient satisfaction rates, with results lasting between five to ten years given appropriate skin care and maintenance.

Recovery*

The initial recovery period from a facelift procedure usually takes about two to three weeks. During this time, you’ll need to get plenty of rest, which is why it’s usually recommended that folks take time off from work during this time. You’ll also see a lot of facial swelling and bruising within the first two to three weeks. You should be able to get back to your normal routine (including physical activity) within the third week after recovery.
