What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Surgery can be performed on either the upper and lower lids, or both.

Specifically, eyelid surgery can treat:

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid

Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

Candidates for an Eyelid Lift

The best candidates for an eyelid lift may have noticed significant drooping of the upper eyelids, excess fatty bags underneath the eyes, or both. Some candidates may even have trouble enjoying their full field of vision thanks to sagging eyelids.

Candidates should be healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for their results and are willing to follow their plastic surgeon’s recommendations for recovery.

How Does It Work?

An eyelid lift is performed by depleting excess fat from around the eyelids, removing excess eyelid skin, and restoring the eyelids to a more youthful position. To begin the eyelid lift procedure, your plastic surgeon will make incisions within the lash line, which helps hide surgical scarring. The final placement of your incisions will depend on if you’re getting an upper eyelid lift, a lower eyelid lift, or both.

Once these incisions are made, your plastic surgeon will remove eyelid fat and reposition sagging eyelid muscles. Finally, excess skin will be trimmed and your incisions will be closed.

At the time of eyelid surgery, often other procedures including brow lift, facelift or fat grafting can be performed as well.

Your eyelid lift results can usually be seen within three to four months after the procedure. Final results take several months as the area completes the healing process. With maintenance of skin care, results can last for five to ten years.

The initial recovery period from an eyelid lift procedure usually takes about two weeks, with final results visible after several months. Most patients see their worst bruising and swelling within the first week after the procedure; for this reason, we recommend taking time off. Applying ice to cool the area dramatically lessens the swelling and bruising. By the second week, you should be able to go back to work and cover up your bruising with makeup. You should be able to get back to your normal routine (including physical activity) within the third or fourth week after recovery.
