If you or your child have misshapen or deformed ears, you may be interested in undergoing an otoplasty procedure. Otherwise known as ear surgery, this treatment was designed to help correct ears that are too large, deformed, or stick out too far from the head. Otoplasty has incredibly high patient satisfaction ratings, as otoplasty can help make patients – especially children – feel more confident about their appearance.
One of the most popular questions we get asked during the otoplasty consultation is: “Does ear surgery change my hearing?”
Does Ear Surgery Affect Hearing?
In short, the answer is no – your otoplasty surgery shouldn’t affect your hearing. It’s why we feel confident recommending this surgery for children with misshapen ears, as it can help address deformities without damaging the child’s hearing.
Otoplasty focuses on correcting the outer physical appearance of ears; there’s no need for the plastic surgeon to go into or near the ear canal. For that reason, you can be sure that your hearing or your child’s hearing will be intact after the surgical procedure.

What Does the Otoplasty Procedure Involve?
Most otoplasty procedures are performed under general anesthesia, which helps ensure that the patient is comfortable while the ears are being transformed. During the procedure, your plastic surgeon will make incisions behind the ears, which allows them to access key areas of the ear. Once the corrections have been made, the incision is closed.
After the procedure, you or your child will need to wear a bandage around the head for up to two weeks; this helps keep the new ear shape in place. You can resume regular activities after this two-week mark, although we recommend refraining from physical activities (like swimming, wrestling, etc) until ears have healed for at least three months.
