What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted.

A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Aging
  • Gravity
  • Heredity

Candidates for a Breast Lift

You may be a good breast lift candidate if:

  • You are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight
  • You do not smoke
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts sag or have lost shape and volume
  • Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
  • Your nipples and areolas point downward
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other

How Does It Work?

A breast lift is performed by a plastic surgeon who will remove excess skin, as well as reposition the nipples and breasts for a perkier, more youthful appearance. A breast lift does not increase breast size, so you shouldn’t see any changes in your bra size. During your breast lift procedure, your plastic surgeon may make incisions underneath the breasts and around the areola. The nipple is repositioned to a point above the breast crease, while excess skin is removed to help create a younger, uplifted appearance.

Your breast lift results are usually visible once most of the swelling and bruising go down, which usually takes about one month.  Healing continues over the next several months, with final results usually achieved at three to six months.

The initial recovery period from a breast lift procedure usually takes about four to six weeks. During the first week, you’ll be expected to wear a surgical bra to help reduce swelling and maintain the new breast shape. Once the first week has passed – you can usually return to work at this time – you’ll be asked to wear a compression bra or sports bra for the next three to four weeks. Release to vigorous gym activities is usually after four to six weeks.
