What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery involves using breast implants to increase the size of your breasts or restore breast volume that has been lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Breast augmentation is clinically referred to as augmentation mammaplasty.

Breast augmentation can:

  • Increase fullness and projection of your breasts
  • Improve the balance of your figure
  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence

Candidates for Breast Augmentation

You may be a candidate for breast augmentation surgery if:

  • You are physically healthy
  • You have realistic expectations
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
  • You are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or with aging
  • You are unhappy with the upper part of your breast appearing “empty”
  • Your breasts are asymmetrical
  • One or both breasts failed to develop normally or have an elongated shape

How Does It Work?

Breast augmentation is performed by a plastic surgeon who uses either silicone or saline implants to increase the size and shape of the breasts. During your breast augmentation procedure, your plastic surgeon will make incisions underneath the breasts, within the armpits, and possibly around the areola, depending on your desired results. The implant is usually placed underneath the pectoral muscle, which helps achieve the most natural appearance possible. Other options include placing the implant above the pectoral muscle or beneath the pectoral fascia. After the implants have been placed, the incisions are closed in layers using dissolving sutures.

Your breast augmentation results can usually be seen within two to three weeks after the procedure, although final results are best evaluated after several months. Breast augmentation procedures have high patient satisfaction rates, but be aware breast implants will likely need to be replaced at some point within your lifetime.

The initial recovery period from a breast augmentation procedure usually takes about two to three weeks. During the first week, you’ll need to get plenty of rest and minimize lifting, which is why it’s usually recommended that folks take time off from work during this time. You’ll have some swelling and bruising, so sleeping on your back is recommended. You should be able to return to work after the first week and get back to normal physical activity within the third or fourth week after the procedure. Release to vigorous gym activity is usually given after four to six weeks.
