What is Abdominoplasty?

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals.

Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:

  • Aging
  • Heredity
  • Pregnancy
  • Prior surgery
  • Significant fluctuations in weight

Candidates for Abdominoplasty

In general, you may be a good tummy tuck candidate if:

  • You are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are a non-smoker
  • You are bothered by the appearance of your abdomen

How Does It Work?

An abdominoplasty is performed by a plastic surgeon, who will make an incision just above the pubic bone to access key abdominal muscles. Your surgeon will reposition and adjust these muscles so as to achieve a flatter stomach. Your plastic surgeon may also remove excess fat, although this should be discussed before the surgery. Occasionally liposuction of areas will be performed during the procedure. Finally, excess skin is removed to help highlight your new stomach.

Results can be seen after six weeks, at which point most of your swelling and bruising should be gone. The area will continue to improve over the next several months. You should see a flatter and more contoured stomach. Results can last for several years, barring any weight gain or future pregnancies.

Because abdominoplasty is a surgery, it’s recommended that patients take at least a week or two off of work to recover. During this time, you’ll need to get as much rest as possible. You’ll want to avoid bending over and/or lifting heavy objects from the ground. Walking is encouraged during this time period. People with office jobs can often return to work after a week, while people who perform more manual activities may want to wait two or three weeks to return to work. Most patients will be able to resume normal activities after four to six weeks, depending on the plastic surgeon’s recommendation.
